At 32, Simon’s wife Teresa, was pregnant in the first six months of marriage. They were a happy couple with a new baby daughter, a home filled with love and true friendship as husband and wife. Simon managed his workaholic lifestyle to a manageable 8 hrs per day and invested in his family. They added a puppy to watch over baby Angie. The house quickly filled with family photos with two boys, Simon, the dog, and two girls, Teresa and Angie, in every imaginable pose, fashion, and expression.

When Angie was 18 months old, she began crying more than usual; comforting her was impossible. She was eating and pooping ok, but she would close her eyes and start crying out of nowhere. After a week of no way to calm her down, they visited their pediatrician.

The doctor was very loving and looked into Angie's eyes with his flashlight, then rubbed her temples, under her chin, and even behind her ears. He was extremely gentle, and Angie thought he was sweet to be so caring to him. He did his routine with the stethoscope, pressed with 2-fingers at her belly, and down to her toes. He asked a multitude of questions about the crying episodes, her diet, her sleep patterns, and any other activity that might create discomfort. Simon mentioned one scary moment when she started crying in the bath. She put her head underwater to feel better, and Simon quickly grabbed her. The doctor acknowledged the events and decided to see a specialist. This was unexpected.

California had three Neonatal ICUs including UCLA, Stanford, and Fresno. In the associated surrounding areas were specialists who cared for infant issues from birth through age two. Over the next month, Angie was seen by five doctors including thorough evaluations, testing, imaging, and finally, a doctor who decided to perform genetic testing of each parent. Angie’s condition seemed to worsen as the crying was being replaced with vomiting and an awkward sort of sadness as if she was beginning to understand that she was sick. The following doctor visit changed their lives forever. While in the office lobby awaiting their visit, she looked up to her father as if to say please help me stop this pain. Simon’s face filled with pain and sadness, and he pulled Angie up to his chest to comfort her. The doctor shared that Angie was suffering from issues in her brain that were causing her to cry and vomit and that the next symptoms would include nausea, irritability and even depression.

“What is causing this,” Simon asked.

“I’d like to have Dr. Somojian see Angie. He specializes in pediatric neurology and understands the nervous system better than anyone. I’ll make a referral for you to see him tomorrow.”

“Is there a need to see him quickly?” said Simon.

“Angie is showing some signs of progression and I don’t want to wait.”

“Doctor, can you explain why we had the genetic testing performed on me and my wife?”

“Normally, it is a protocol for conditions where kids are undiagnosed, and we screen for any genetic disorders that may give us clues to the situation.
